Stevens Tops Women's Basketball

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team suffered an 80-61 setback to Stevens Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (2-2) jumped out to a 6-2 lead early on the heels of baskets from TERESA WOLAK, NICKIE CARTER, and BRIANNA MONTAJES. After a Ducks (4-1) basket, Montclair went on a 9-0 run spanning nearly three minutes to open a double-digit lead.
  • A layup by MADELYN MCCREA with 15 seconds to go in the first sent Montclair into the second quarter with a seven-point lead. The Ducks opened the second quarter with a 10-3 spurt before Carter stopped the run with a three-pointer.
  • Carter extended the lead to five with a shot from beyond the arc, but Stevens embarked on a 12-0 rally to take the lead. Stevens entered halftime with an eight-point lead and shot 10-of-11 from the charity stripe in the second period.
  • The Red Hawks get the deficit in half early in the third, with SHANNON HUGHES connecting on a three and Carter hitting a free throw. The Ducks recorded the next 11 markers before a layup, and a free throw from Wolak stopped the run.
  • Stevens finished with an 11-3 run before LYNDSEY ROSS notched the final four points of the afternoon for Montclair State with a three and a free throw.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Wolak and Carter tied for the team lead with 18 points as they combined for 13 rebounds and seven assists.
  • Hughes and MAHOGANY WORSLEY-WOOTEN added six points, with McCrea chipping in five.
  • Jess Broad powered Stevens with 32 points and nine rebounds as Elissa Nsenkyire added 20.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks open New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday as they head to NJCU for a 6 pm matchup.
