Women's Basketball Drops NJAC Opener to NJCU

Jersey City, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team fell to NJCU 66-48 in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair State (2-3, 0-1 NJAC) started the game on an 11-3 run, with NICKIE CARTER hitting a pair of threes and TERESA WOLAK notching two layups during the spurt. The Red Hawks extended the lead with three consecutive free throws to make it 16-5 before NJCU finished the period with the final four points.
  • The Red Hawks stretched the gap back to eight early in the second at 20-12, but a 6-0 Gothic Knight spurt made it a one-possession affair. The hosts took their first lead of the game on a Kyara Cowan layup to jump in front 22-21 before outscoring Montclair State 8-1 over the final 3:13.
  • NJCU entered halftime with a 29-22 edge and shot 50% from the floor in the second period while limiting Montclair State to just 2-of-16 shooting.
  • The Red Hawks closed to within four after a pair of Carter free throws 1:59 into the third before the senior connected from downtown to make it 35-30 NJCU. TERESA WOLAK converted a layup with 4:12 left in the stanza to shrink the margin to three, but NJCU took over from there.
  • The hosts closed the third with an 11-2 spurt, including a buzzer-beating three from Laney Fox. A 10-0 Gothic Knight run stretched the lead to double figures as the Red Hawks would be unable to get any closer than 18 the rest of the way.
