Women's Soccer Outlasts Rutgers-Camden in Penalty Kicks To Move Into NJAC Championship Game

Montclair, NJ – The top-seeded Montclair State women's soccer team outlasted Rutgers-Camden in penalty kicks after the sides battled to a 0-0 draw in regulation in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Semifinals Wednesday.

The Red Hawks (16-1-1) outscored Rutgers-Camden (4-8-6) 5-4 in penalty kicks to advance to the NJAC Championship Game Saturday against Rowan at 1 pm at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides engaged in a defensive battle in the first half, combining for four shots over the first 45 minutes. KYLIE PRENDERGAST had the best opportunity, as her 25th-minute attempt was punched wide by Kayla McKeever.
  • Neither Rutgers-Camden nor Montclair State tallied a shot on goal in the second stanza until late, but Montclair State hunted for the first goal. LAUREN ERNST pinged a try off the crossbar in the 72nd minute before the junior missed just left of the goal in the 73rd.
  • Montclair goalkeeper HALEY MARTIN was tested in the 80th minute, making her first save of the game on Maggie Horn. The Red Hawks finished with one last chance with 55 ticks left in the second period as Ernst was stopped by McKeever once again.
  • The Red Hawks peppered McKeever with three shots in the second overtime, but all were rejected and sent the game into penalty kicks.
  • Maresa Saverese and EMMI DENOVELLIS converted in round one before Lauren Bone missed her shot high. KIMBERLY CAMPBELL, AILEEN CAHILL, and KERRI DRISCOLL scored for MSU as Emily Owens, Hannah Crowley, and Amy Maurer notched markers for Camden. Needing to make the kick to win, NIKI DANZ beat McKeever, propelling the team into the NJAC Championship.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ernst tallied a game-high five shots, as EMILY SCHULER and Campbell added two.
  • McKeever made seven saves in the setback, as Martin denied one for Montclair State.
