Fourth Quarter Rally Sends Women's Basketball Past Vassar

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to knock off Vassar College 62-57 in their season-opener Tuesday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rookie ISABELLA ORLANDO drained a three-pointer with 11 ticks left in the first quarter, trimming the deficit to one as the teams entered the second.
  • The Brewers opened the second quarter with six straight points and kept the Red Hawks scoreless for the first 5:50 of the period. Montclair State only tallied six points during the frame, allowing Vassar to open up an eight-point halftime advantage.
  • The Brewers held Montclair to just 6-of-26 from the floor in the first half and held an 8-1 edge in second chance over the first 20 minutes.
  • The lead swelled to 12 early in the third but an 8-0 Red Hawk spurt cut the gap to one. During the rally, SHANNON HUGHES and MEGAN DUFFY drained consecutive three-pointers to keep the team in the game.
  • Vassar ended the third period on an 11-4 spurt, taking the same point lead into the fourth and led by 11 with 5:34 to go on a Naiya Kurnik layup.
  • Montclair State embarked on a 9-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws from Duffy. Vassar answered with a Julia Harvey fastbreak layup, but Montclair leveled the game at 52 layups from NICKIE CARTER and Duffy.
  • The Brewers briefly regained the lead, but Carter grabbed an offensive board, and KENDALL HODGES hit a layup, giving MSU their first lead of the night. The Red Hawks forced a turnover, and Orlando drilled a corner three with 33 seconds to go, extending the gap to four.
  • Montclair State hit five of six free throws in the waning moments, cementing the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Duffy led the Red Hawks with 17 points, as Carter added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds and six steals.
  • Newcomer TERESA WOLAK filled the stat sheet with eight points, six steals, and four rebounds.
  • Harvey led the Brewers with 16 points, as Kurnik recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
