Vero Ties Career-High In Blocks As Women's Basketball Edged By No. 6 Amherst

Las Vegas, Nev. - Sophomore OLIVIA VERO recorded the second-most blocks in D3hoops.com Classic history, but the Montclair State women's basketball team dropped a 61-51 decision to No. 6 Amherst Wednesday.

Vero swatted six shots, two off of the previous best of eight set by Kaitlin Jamieson of George Fox against Carthage on December 28, 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mammoths (8-0) grabbed an early 6-2 advantage before the Red Hawks finished the first period with seven of the final 10 markers. Montclair (5-5) limited Amherst to one field goal over the final 6:43 as the two sides were even at nine entering the second.
  • TERESA WOLAK had four points in the first 2:20 of the second stanza, which saw five ties. The Mammoths finished the frame with five of the final six points to take their largest of the opening first half, seven points, entering halftime.
  • A layup 1:25 into the third extended the deficit to 10, but the Red Hawks embarked on a 7-0 spurt over the next 2:06, trimming the gap to three. During the rally, Vero, Wolak, and NICKIE CARTER all converted baskets in the paint.
  • Carter hit another layup with 3:36 to go, but six consecutive points brought the lead to eight before the senior ended the period with a fastbreak layup with three seconds left.
  • The Carter bucket was the start of a personal 8-0 run for the Flemington, NJ native, as her jumper with 6:58 left evened the score at 44.
  • The Mammoths went on a game-changing 14-2 run over the following four minutes, stretching the lead to double-figures. The Red Hawks would only get as close as nine and could not complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
