Men's Basketball Tops Alvernia For 10th Straight Win

Center Valley, Pa. – The Montclair State men's basketball team earned their 10th consecutive victory, knocking off Alvernia 61-54 in the opening round of the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament Thursday.
 
The Red Hawks (10-0) advanced to the Championship Game tomorrow, where they will play host DeSales. Alvernia and Ursinus will meet in the Consolation Game at 5 pm.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A low-scoring first half saw just 13 points scored over the first 10:01, with Montclair opening up an 11-2 advantage. KIERAN FLANAGAN opened the scoring with a triple before KYREE HENRY finished the run with a three-pointer.
  • The Red Hawks led by as much as nine with 4:43 to go before the Golden Wolves whittled the lead down to five on four straight Malik Green tallies. Montclair would take a nine-point advantage into halftime as KEYON PRYCE beat the buzzer with a jumper with one second to go.
  • Alvernia opened the second half with a 9-1 spurt, trimming the deficit to one point. Green knocked down a jumper with 16:35 left, leveling the game at 31.
  • Henry stopped the run with a jumper and scored four points during a 9-0 run to push Montclair back in front. The Golden Wolves didn't go away, trimming the score to four at 47-43 with under 10 minutes left in the period.
  • Juniors FRANCISCO PAULINO and AMIR WILLIAMS pushed the lead back to seven before a strip-and-steal by Nigel Cooke brought Alvernia to within two. Keba Mitchell knocked down a jumper with 2:11 left, equalizing the contest at 54.
  • On the next trip down the floor, STEVEN BREEMAN was fouled and sank two free throws, giving Montclair a lead they would not relinquish. The Red Hawks held Alvernia without a field goal over the final 2:11, as Breeman and Williams hit two from the charity stripe, and Breeman capped the scoring with a three.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • MIKE JACKSON led Montclair with 14 points, as Paulino added eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
  • The Red Hawks bench doubled the Golden Wolves tallying 22 points to Alvernia's 11.
  • Willians chipped in seven points, four boards, and three steals while going 5-of-6 from the line.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks and Bulldogs will square off at 7 pm in Center Valley, Pa., tomorrow evening.
