New Brunswick, NJ – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams each stand in fifth place following the first full day of action at the 2022 Metropolitan Championships at Rutgers University on Friday evening.
The men totaled 161 points through the first six events of the 21-event, four-day championship. The women are at 261.5 points, 17.5 points behind the United States Merchant Marine Academy for fourth.
Freshmen
JULIE TIEDEMANN and
JULIANA SKOPP-CARDILLO highlighted the Red Hawks' performances in Friday night's finals. Tiedemann placed sixth in the 500 freestyle posting a time of 5:16.92 with Skopp-Cardillo placing in the same spot in the 50 freestyle (24.66). Sophomore
LIDIA BOGUSLAWSKA won the "B" final and finished ninth overall clocking in at 24.67 seconds with
ABBY BROCK placing 15
th with a time of 25.36 seconds.
ERIN BARRETT finished 16
th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.49 and MSU's 200 medley relay was third.
EMILY ROTHAMEL, Brock, Juliet DiPasquale and Boguslawska combined on a time of 1:49.11. Divers
EMMA BOWERS (252.75 points) and
SABRINA ROBINSON (231.55 points) were ninth and 10
th, respectively in the 3-meter event.
For the men,
RYAN KAPPES swam 4:44.50 in the finals to post an eighth-place finish in the 500 meters. Freshman
LUCAS GOMES was also eighth as he clocked in at 20.90 seconds in the 50 freestyle.
SANTIAGO VANEGAS finished 18
th in the 200 IM (1:58.09).
Gomes anchored the 200 medley relay that flirted with the school record in the event, before falling short in a fifth-place finish. Gomes, Dennis Delargy,
SPENSER DUBOIS, and
JOHN ENGLERT put together a time of 1:34.14, two-tenths shy of the mark set at the 2017 Metropolitan Championships.
The action continues at the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, February 19 with seven events to be contested. Action starts with the preliminaries at 9:30 am with finals taking place at 5:30 pm.
