Red Hawks Sweep McDaniel in Maryland

MSU Wins Game 1 in Walk-Off; Triumphs 6-3 in Nightcap

Aberdeen, MD – The Montclair State baseball team got a walk-off win in the 10th of the opener and used a five-run outburst in the second contest as the Red Hawks swept McDaniel College at the Ripken Experience on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (2-1) knocked off the Green Terror, 7-6 in Game 1 before completing the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

Sophomore centerfielder MICHAEL MURPHY gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener and MSU led 4-0 after scoring three times in the fourth. Sophomore JORDEN JURKIEWICZ doubled home two runs with Murphy adding an RBI single.

A Jurkiewicz fielder's choice in the fifth extended the Red Hawks' lead to 6-0 however, McDaniel battled back with four runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to pull within 6-5. Billy Wheatley's ground out in the seventh inning knotted the game at 6-6.

In the bottom of the 10th, SAM ANGELO walked to open the inning. Pinch-runner JOE GISONDA went to second on an errant pickoff attempt and moved to third on a wild pitch putting the winning run 90 feet away. MSU would load the bases, but McDaniel was able to erase Gisonda on a force out at the plate for the first out. MILES FEASTER bounced a ball to first base, however the throw attempt to force the runner at hoe went wide allowing ANTHONY GUARINO to cross the plate with the winning run.

Freshman righthander ETHAN GONZALEZ (1-0) picked up the win tossing a scoreless 10th inning as he fanned two of the four batters he faced. Senior lefthander BRIAN REISS went the first 5 1/3 innings allowing two runs and three hits, striking out four and walking two. Senior righty CHRIS LUM pitched three scoreless innings.

Jurkiewicz finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and also scored twice. Murphy was 3-for-5.

Montclair State and McDaniel traded runs in the second inning and the Green Terror took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth before Montclair answered with five runs in its half to take the lead. Gisonda and JOE NORTON each collected an RBI with RYAN MCKENNA making it a 4-2 contest with RBI single through the right side. Jurkiewicz lofted a sacrifice fly for the fourth run with ANDREW OLLWERTHER smacking a run-scoring single as MSU led 6-2.

Senior NICHOLAS SEFICK nailed down the win as he pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save. Freshman Nicholas Curcio earned the win in relief going three innings allowing a run and two hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Ollwerther had two hits for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State is back out on the road next weekend for its next set of games. MSU will be in Washington, D.C. for a three-game set with Catholic University. The Red Hawks battle the Cardinals in single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 25-27.
