Vassar's Late Push Upends MSU in Season Opener, 15-12

Dancsecs Four Goals; Boyle Collects Six Points

Poughkeepsie, NY – Vassar College scored four of the final five goals using that late push for a 15-12 victory over Montclair State on Tuesday evening.

Riley Olds finished with three goals, including a goal and an assist in the decisive run as the Brewers captured their season opener. Olds also had two assists. Troy Santise led Vassar with four goals and two assists. Logan Hyde tallied twice.

MATT DANCSECS had four goals and an assist for the Red Hawks (0-1), who got a goal and five assists from CHRISTIAN BOYLE. TYLER MCCREERY found the back of the net three times.

Vassar led by two after one period and opened up a 9-3 lead at halftime.

After Dancsecs scored early in the third, Olds registered a man-up goal a minute later for a 10-4 Brewers lead with 12:31 left. MSU responded with four in a row to trim the deficit. Dancsecs started it off with goals by Boyle and McCreery, making the score 10-7 heading into the fourth. A MATTHEW HOLLAND goal 1:31 into the final period pulled MSU within two.

Logan Hyde ended the run two minutes later, but Montclair strung together three straight, the last two by McCreery, who tied the game at 11-11 with 7:07 remaining. The Brewers' James Nicholas sent Vassar back into the lead a minute later and started the game-ending run. Olds connected with 5:12 left and a goal by Hyde with four minutes to play gave the hosts a 14-11 advantage.

Dancsecs would get one back for Montclair State off the ensuing faceoff, but that would be as close as MSU would get. Santise scored the final goal with 59 seconds to play.

Dave Driscoll won 14 faceoffs and scooped up 11 ground balls for the Red Hawks. WILSON SMITH forced three turnovers, and goalkeeper DAVID METZGER stopped 12 shots.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Friday, February 25, with another road contest. MSU is in Scranton, PA, for a 5:30 pm matchup with the University of Scranton.
