Collegeville, PA – Ursinus College's Tyler Neal scored three of his five goals during a pivotal fourth-quarter run as the Bears knocked off Montclair State, 13-9 on Wednesday afternoon.
Tre Tillman and Jerry Bardol scored twice as Ursinus (2-1) scored the last five goals to move to 2-1 on the season.
CHRISTIAN BOYLE and MATTHEW HOLLAND scored three goals apiece for the Red Hawks (0-2). TYLER MCCREERY recorded a goal and three assists.
MATT DANCSECS gave MSU a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal 1:12 into the game. But Ursinus answered with the following four goals. Bardol tied the game, and Erik Ojert put the hosts in front with 8:45 to go. Jeremey Calabro connected 36 seconds later, with Neal scoring inside the six-minute mark, helping the Bears to a 4-1 advantage.
The Red Hawks turned the tables in the second, recording four of the first five goals. CHRISTIAN BOYLE finished off a TYLER MCCREERY feed cutting the deficit in half. Chase Rondeau pushed the lead back to 5-2 with 9:15 remaining. However, TYLER MCCREERY, MIKE MCCREERY, and MATTHEW HOLLAND scored in a 1:53 span, tying the game at 5-5. Bardol's second regained the lead for Ursinus, but MSU tied it back up with a minute remaining. Holland got the equalizer with 61 seconds left before halftime as the teams headed into the locker room tied a 6-6.
The back and forth continued in the third quarter as Neal sent Ursinus back in front early and then fed Tommy Reinhart for a man-up goal for an 8-6 lead with 3:36 left. Montclair countered with two of their own. The first a Boyle goal with 2:38 left before Holland's third deadlocked the game at 8-8 with 54 seconds to play.
TYLER MCCREERY found Boyle on the man-advantage two minutes into the fourth, giving MSU its first lead since the early moments of the game at 9-8, its first since the early moments of the game. However, Ursinus would swing the momentum back in its favor with their game-ending run. Neal forged a 9-9 tie 13 seconds after the Boyle goal. Tillman scored with 10 minutes remaining to put the Bears in front for good. Neal followed a minute later with his fourth, with Tillman scoring again with 8:52 on the clock s Ursinus led 12-9. Neal got the final score inside the three-minute mark.
DAVID METZGER stopped 18 shots for MSU. ANDREA FIORENZA won 12 faceoffs and scooped up six ground balls. TYLER MCCREERY had five ground balls, with Dansecs recording four. JACK WHITE forced three turnovers, with AIDAN LONG and AIDAN MAXWELL causing two apiece.
Montclair State returns home for its Sprague Field debut on Saturday, March 5, as it hosts Gwynedd Mercy at Noon.
