RHIANNON BROWN scored four goals, but the Montclair State women's lacrosse team dropped their season-opener 13-10 to Haverford Saturday afternoon.
The Fords (1-0) received three goals from Roma Hladky and Tiffany Mikulis.
Haverford wasted little time, opening the scoring just 46 seconds in. The Red Hawks tallied the following two goals, as Brown and
KAITLYN ARCEDE netted free-position markers. The visitors went on a 3-0 spurt over the next 2:56, opening up a two-goal advantage. After a yellow card, the Red Hawks pulled to within a goal as Brown fed
TRISTIN KONEN for her first of the year. As time ticked away, the Fords had an additional tally with two seconds left to enter the second up 5-3.
Arcede cut the lead in half at the 2:49 mark of the second, but the Fords regained their two-goal lead precisely one minute later. A defensive battle went on, and neither side could find the back of the net until there were 28 seconds left in the frame. Brown recorded her second free-position goal of the day to trim the deficit to one entering halftime.
Haverford held a slim 11-9 edge in shots at the break while the two sides each grabbed nine ground balls.
Brown completed the hat-trick with her third goal of the day 6:09 into the third stanza to level the game at six midway through the frame. Goalkeeper
ALLYN LILIEN made a save on a Mikulis free-position try, and the Red Hawks marched the downfield to take to grab their first lead since 2-1.
HALEY DORAN successfully made the free-position attempt, and MSU went in front 7-6.
The lead was short-lived, as Haverford tallied two markers in 57 seconds to jump back in front. The two sides would combine for five goals over the final 4:47, with Arcede capping off the scoring off a Konen feed with 29 ticks left in the third. The fourth quarter was the difference, as the Fords erupted for four consecutive tallies to take their largest lead at 13-9.
MORGAN CONNON capped off the scoring on the day, as her score with three seconds left off an Arcede feed established the final margin.
Arcede notched three goals and two assists as Konen finished with a goal and an assist. Lilien made 10 saves in goal as
KATHERINE YARUSSO forced four turnovers. Hladky recorded three goals and an assist as Katharine Ference handed out three assists in the victory.
