ANDREW OLLWERTHER homered and drove in three runs in the nightcap as Montclair State earned a split of its doubleheader with Trinity College at Murren/DiBenedetto Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The Red Hawks (10-4) held off the Bantams (1-1) for an 8-6 victory in Game 2. Trinity captured the first game, 3-1.
After dropping the first game, Montclair quickly grabbed a three-run lead in the first inning.
JORDEN JURKIEWICZ doubled home
PETER COSENTINO, who had reached on a one-out single. Following a strike out, Ollwether belted a two-run blast, making the score 3-0. Ollwerther would strike again in the third inning with an RBI single for a four-run advantage.
Cosentino collected an RBI in the fifth and
MILES FEASTER scampered home on a passed ball in the sixth as MSU widened its lead to 6-0. The Bantams broke through with a run in its half of the sixth, however Montclair State got that back with a run in seventh. Trinity closed the game to 7-3 in the seventh, but again the Red Hawks answered in the eighth. Jurkiewicz came home on a wild pitch restoring the lead to 8-3.
Trinity plated two runs in the bottom of the inning and had a runner on with two outs when reliever
JACK HAVESON came on and ended the threat. The Bantams drew closer in the ninth with a run and had the tying run at the plate. But Haveson came up with a strikeout to end the game.
Freshman
MATT PONTARI (1-1) recorded his first career victory as he allowed six hits over the first five innings, striking out six and walking one. Outfielder
RYAN MCKENNA was 3-for-3 with Cosentino and Ollwerther each getting two hits.
In the opener, Jurkiewicz belted a solo home run in the second to give Montclair State a 1-0 lead. The Bantams took the lead in the third with two runs and added a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Mike Guanci for a 3-1 lead.
Righthander Jimmy Fahey (1-1) went six innings to earn the victory before giving way to Justin Olson, who tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.
PATRICK CUCCURULLO (2-2) took the loss.
JOE NORTON went 3-for-4 and surpassed the 200-hit mark for his career becoming the 13
th player in program history to reach that milestone. He also stole two bases in the second game giving him 67 career swipes, one shy of Dave Wurst's all-time record.
MSU is scheduled to be in action at hone on Wednesday, March 16 against Eastern University at 3:00 pm.
