Red Hawks Clipped in Overtime by SUNY-Geneseo, 12-11

Salanger Goal Lifts Knights past Red Hawks

Montclair, NJ - Sophomore midfielder Emily Salanger scored 37 seconds into overtime as SUNY Geneseo put the final pendulum swing in their favor with a 12-11 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Monday afternoon.

Salanger finished with two goals as did Megan Henderson and Emma Gaenzle as the Knights improved to 2-1 on the season. Hannah Marafioti finished with a goal and five assists with Megan Cook adding a goal and two assists.

Senior TRISTIN KONEN scored a career-high six goals for MSU (1-3). Senior AMBER GONZALEZ had a goal and 18 draws, one shy of the school record.

SUNY Geneseo jumped out to 4-0 lead early in the first, however Montclair chipped away at the deficit, pulling within 6-4 at the half as Konen scored with four minutes remaining before halftime. HALEY DORAN made it a one-goal contest early in the third and, after a Gaenzle goal, Montclair put three straight in the back of the net to take its first lead. Konen had two, including her fifth with 12:21 left in the fourth for 8-7 Montclair State advantage.

Reegan Vorgang answered for Geneseo tying the game back up, but MORGAN CONNON countered with 8:52 remaining as Montclair led 9-8. The Knights registered the next two goals, both by Henderson to back in front, 10-9. The Red Hawks swung the momentum back their way as CHELSEA STACK and Konen connected making the score 11-10 in favor of the Red Hawks with 2:36 to play.

Molly Brown would win the ensuing draw for Geneseo, which proved important as the Knights turned that into the tying goal with just over two minutes to go. Each team would get an opportunity to win the game in regulation. The Red Hawks got the first, but turned the ball over with 20 seconds left. Geneseo then raced up the field and managed to get a shot off with seven tick, however, Brown's attempt was snared by Lilien.

In the overtime, April Rowell came down with the draw. After a few passes, Marafioti found a cutting Salanger for the game-winner.

Emily DeJohn made seven saves for the Knights, who got five caused turnover and four ground balls from Meg Seeley. Salanger and Rowell had three draws each.

Doran registered four assists and MAEVE CARNEY forced two turnovers for Montclair. Lilien totaled nine saves.

Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, March 16 when it hosts in-state rival Stevens at 7:00 pm.
