Swarthmore Gets by Montclair, 8-7

Murphy, Guarino Homer, Three RBI Each

Swarthmore, PA – senior rightielder Paul Cooke went 3-for-4 with four RBI as Swarthmore edged Montclair State, 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Nate Jbara had two hits and two RBI for the Garnet (6-9), who earned their second win over MSU this season. Swarthmore defeated Montclair, 14-5 in the season opener for both teams back on February 19.

Sophomore outfielder MICHAEL MURPHY and senior catcher ANTHONY GUARINO each homered and drove in three runs for the Red Hawks (11-5).

The Garnet led 4-0 at the first three innings. Cooke walked with the bases loaded in the first and a fielder's choice delivered a second run. Luke Mutz collected and RBI double in the second before Jbara's solo homer in the third gave Swarthmore the four-run cushion.

Murphy got the Red Hawks on the board in the fourth with an RBI single. Jbara's run-scoring single in the fifth pushed the lead back to 5-1, however MSU would tie it up in the seven on Guarino's three-run homer knotting the game at 7-7.

Cooke would get the lead back for Swarthmore in the seventh with two-run double, but the was countered by a Murphy two-run blast deadlocking the contest t 7-7.

Swarthmore went back in front for the final time in the eighth, putting together a two-out rally. Mutz singled and stole second. After a walk, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Cooke then laid down a perfect squeeze but scoring Mutz with the go-ahead run.

Reliever Rohan Cherukuri made the hold up as he allowed a two-out base runner before nailing down his first save of the season.

Alexander Rimerman (1-2) earned the win in relief. JUSTIN SILVA (0-1) suffered the loss for MSU. PETER COSENTINO and MILES FEASTER had two hits each.

Montclair State is back in action on Sunday, March 20 at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Red Hawks host Manhattanville College in a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
