Montclair, NJ – Freshman catcher Delaney O'Donoghue drove in three runs in the opener and righthander Teagan Bradley tossed s six-hit shutout in the nightcap as Drew University swept Montclair State, 10-4 and 1-0 at the MSU Softball Stadium on Wednesday.
Senior outfielder Renata Primmer had three RBI total as the Rangers upped their record to 14-4 on the season.
Second baseman
AMBER REED had three hits and a run batted in for the Red Hawks (10-5), who had their six-game winning streak snapped.
Scoreless into the second inning of Game 1, Drew put six runs on the board the first three from O'Donoghue, who doubled up the gap in left-center with the bases loaded. She would score on an error for a 4-0 lead. Madi Precht singled in another run with an RBI double by Primmer giving the Rangers the six-run cushion.
Drew added four more runs in the sixth. Molly O'Brien brought home two with a base hit and a third run scored on an error pushing the score to 9-0. Primmer delivered the final run with a ground out.
Montclair State battled its way back into the game in its half of the sixth. Reed singled back through the middle scoring
MADISON LEECH for the first run.
MARIAH CARRASCO drove in another with a fielder's choice and a sac fly by
ALYSSA BOROZAN cut the lead to 10-3.
KAYLA COSENTINO walked with the bases loaded and MSU came within inches of closing the gap further. With the bases loaded still full,
DANIELLE SIBILIO laced a ball into the right-center gap however, Precht made a diving grab to end the inning.
Bailey Comeau (5-3) picked up the victory as she went the distance allowing four runs and seven hits. She struck out five and walked seven. Righthander
ALI CAVALLARO (6-3) took the loss for the Red Hawks.
In the second game, Bradley and MSU's
KAYLA VOLANTE matched zeroes on the scoreboard until the sixth inning. O'Brien led off with a single and stole second and third. Primmer then flared a single over the draw-in infield allowing O'Brien to score with the only run of the game.
Bradley (6-1) made that hold up as she struck out 10 in the complete-game victory. Volante (4-1) allowed four hits in her seven innings of work.
MSU is back in action on Saturday, March 26 at home. The Red Hawks host Keene State (NH) in a doubleheader at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 2:00 pm.
