Montclair, NJ –
ANTHONY GUARINO and
JOE GISONDA tallied four apiece as the Montclair State baseball team established season-highs in runs and hits in a 21-4 victory over Baruch College Saturday.
The Red Hawks (15-5) scored over 20 runs for the first time this season and pounded out a season-best 26 hits, including 11 extra-base knocks.
After a scoreless first, the Red Hawks got on the board in the second. Guarino reached on a one-out single and came around to score on a double by
JASON MOORE. Montclair State exploded for four runs in the third, as they tallied three or more runs in five frames. With the bases loaded,
RYAN MCKENNA cleared this with a double into the left-center field gap. Guarino capped the inning off with a single into right field as MSU led 5-0 after three.
JOE NORTON led off with a double down the left-field line before
PETER COSENTINO hit a mammoth home run to left-center field. The following batter was
JORDEN JURKIEWICZ, and the sophomore homered to right-center on a ball that just cleared the wall. Guarino recorded a sacrifice fly, and Gisonda would score to finish off the fourth. Montclair continued the barrage in the fifth, pushing five runs across.
BLAISE RANTANEN delivered a two-run triple down the right-field line with two outs. Gisonda singled Rantanen home before McKenna and Guarino had RBI knocks.
PATRICK CUCCURULLO tossed five hitless innings before the bullpen surrendered the game's first tally.
XANDER NABORS got in on the action with an RBI triple in the sixth, the first extra-base hit of his career. Gisonda continued his career day at the dish with an RBI double, and Guarino singled in Rantanen with a knock to left. After the Bearcats tallied a pair in the top of seventh, Rantanen finished off the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with a home run to right field. Baruch would tack an additional run in the ninth, but
NICK DESIDERIO punctuated the game with a called strike three.
14 different Red Hawks had at least one hit, and Rantanen knocked in a career-high five runs. Montclair State also hit six doubles, including two from Gisonda and McKenna. On the mound, Cuccurullo fanned nine batters while Desiderio added two in the ninth.
The Red Hawks will face DeSales Tuesday, with the first pitch at Yogi Berra Stadium scheduled for 3:30 pm.
