Cavallaro Throws No-Hitter as MSU Blanks Gwynedd Mercy, 7-0

Junior Righty Helps Red Hawks Split on First Day in Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach, SC – Junior righthander ALI CAVALLARO tossed a no-hitter and matched her career high with 12 strikeouts as Montclair State earned a split of its first two games on Monday with a 7-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy.

Sophomore KAYLA COSENTINO had three hits and three RBI with junior JENNA MELUSO adding three hits and two runs batted in for the Red Hawks (1-1), who earlier in the day fell to Gettysburg, 15-10.

Cavallaro recorded her first career no-hitter and the 42nd in program history which came two years to the day of the last one. Kiara Ruiz did not allow a hit against Becker College on March 7, 2020 in Florida.

The Red Hawks got all the offensive support for Cavallaro in the bottom of the first inning. ALYSSA BOROZAN led off with a double and scored as Meluso smacked a base hit back through the middle. Cosentino dropped a double along the left field line bringing home Meluso for the 2-0 lead.

MSU maintained the two-run lead until the fifth when it scored three times. Borozan singled with one out and after going to second on a passed ball, scored as Meluso doubled to center. Cosentino singled in the field before DANIELLE SIBILIO cracked a hit to center driving in Meluso making the score 4-0. One out later, an AMBER REED infield single plated Cosentino.

Montclair got its final two runs in the seventh. Borozan, who finished 3-for-4, singled in he infield. Meluso followed with her third hit with both runners moving up to second and third on a wild pitch. Cosentino flipped another double down the left field line for two RBI and a 7-0 Montclair State advantage.

Cavallaro, who faced three batters over the minimum, would retire the final nine of the final 10 batters she faced, including a strikeout for the last out to complete her outstanding performance.

Against Gettysburg, the Red Hawks trailed 5-1 in the third inning before erupting for five runs in its half of the frame. Sibilio drove in the first run with a double and ANNALESA DILAURENZIO drew a walk with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 5-3. Borozan put Montclair in front with a bases-clearing triple. MSU added to the lead in the fifth inning as Borozan plated two with a double making the score 8-5. Meluso added an RBI double giving the Red Hawks a four-run advantage. But the Bullets answered with a nine-run sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Borozan finished 3-or-5 at the plate with five RBI while Sibilio (two RBI) and ALEXIS LAW each had three hits.

The Red Hawks are back in action at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Tournament in North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, March 8. Montclair faced Salem College at 11:30 pm with a 1:30 pm first pitch versus Anna Maria College.
