Red Hawks Powers Past Bridgewater State in Myrtle Beach Opener

MSU Sets School Record with 11 Doubles, Cosentino Drives in Six

Myrtle Beach, SC – Senior first baseman PETER COSENTINO had three doubles and six runs batted in as Montclair State scored every in inning between the first and last in a 17-2 victory over Bridgewater State on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore center fielder MICHAEL MURPHY added three RBI and SAM ANGELO added three hits and two runs batted in as the Red Hawks (7-3) scored 10 or more runs in a game for the fifth time this season. MSU also set a school record with 11 doubles in the game, including three by Cosentino, who tied the single-game mark. Montclair broke the previous team mark of nine versus John Carroll in 2010.

Montclair grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Angelo and RBI single from catcher ANTHONY GUARINO. Cosentino doubled in two runs in the third inning when MSU plated four runs and added a bases-clearing double in the fourth. Murphy also drove in a run with a ground out as Montclair led 10-1.

After tallying a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, JORDEN JURKIEWICZ and Murphy collected RBI in the seventh widening the lead to 15-1. JOE NORTON, who finished 4-for-5 with five run scored, doubled in a run in the eighth with Cosentino driving in the final Red Hawk run on his third run-scoring double of the contest.

Freshman NICOLAS CURCIO was the beneficiary of the early support, picking up the win to move to 2-0 on the season. Curcio scattered seven hits over five innings, allowing a run with four strikeouts. ALEC BENZINGER and PATRICK TEEHAN finished up with four innings of two-hit ball.  

The Red Hawks close out their trip to Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, March 9 with a doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene College beginning at 2:30 pm.
