Baseball Tops WPU to Begin Home-and-Home Series

Moore Two RBI as Red Hawks Capture Eighth Straight

Wayne, NJ – Senior shortstop JASON MOORE had two hits and two RBI as Montclair State downed William Paterson, 7-3 in the first game of a home-and-home between the local rivals as Jeff Albies Field on Thursday afternoon.

First baseman PETER COSENTINO also drove in a pair of runs for the Red Hawks (25-7, 10-1 NJAC), who extended their winning streak to eight games. ANTHONY GUARINO was 4-for-5 with and RBI with JOE NORTON and RYAN MCKENNA recording one run batted in apiece.

The two teams are set to meet again on Friday, April 22 with the scene shifting to Yogi Berra Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

Montclair took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Michel Murphy walked and ANDREW OLLWERTHER reached on a bunt single with Murphy going to third on a wild pitch. Guarino singled through the left side bringing home Murphy with the first run and two batter later, McKenna sent a ball back through the middle for a 2-0 lead. Norton followed with another single scoring Guarino.

The Pioneers (21-10, 7-4 NJAC) closed within 3-2, however the Red Hawks were able to push the lead back out to five two with two runs in the fourth. Moore singled through the left side to plate MILES FEASTER with Guarino scampering home on a sac fly by Cosentino.

Cosentino would add an RBI single in the sixth and Moore had the final MSU run batted in in the seventh with a single that scored Feaster. WPU scored run in the bottom of the seventh for what turned out to be the final margin.

Lefthander ETHAN GONZALEZ went the first six innings to earn the win, moving to 3-1 on the season. Gonzalez allowed six hits and three runs (one earned) with a pair of strikeouts. Righthander JACK HAVESON registered the final seven outs for his seventh saves of the year.
