Softball Falls to Kean in NJAC Play

Union, NJ – The Montclair State softball team dropped a pair of games to Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Tuesday.

The Red Hawks (17-8, 1-3 NJAC) fell 5-0 and 2-1 to Kean (17-5, 3-1 NJAC).

After the first two innings in game one passed without a baserunner, the Cougars broke through for two in the top of the third. After a one-out bunt single, Paige Metz hit a two-run home run to left field to put Kean on the board. The Red Hawks threatened in the top of the fourth, as JENNA MELUSO and KAYLA COSENTINO singled with one out. Pitcher Karly Messina escaped the jam by getting a pair of pop-ups to finish the inning.

The Cougars added two runs on a single and a double steal in the fourth before Montclair again put runners on in the fifth. KATIE DEBELL and ALEXIS LAW led off with walks, but Messina got the next three batters to prevent any runs from scoring. Kean capped off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, successfully executing a double steal with Gabriella Fredette stealing home.

The Red Hawks pushed the game's first run across in the nightcap, using a two-out rally. Law walked, EMILY JACOBS singled, and ANNALESA DILAURENZIO walked to load the bases for MADISON LEECH. Leech worked a five-pitch walk to score Law and MSU led 1-0 after two. The Cougars leveled the game in the bottom of the third, as Eliza Filus notched an RBI single.

Kean scored what became the eventual winning in the bottom fifth. After loading the bases with no one out, Filus hit into a fielder's choice that pushed a run across to give them their first lead of game two. The Cougars had second and third with one out, but KAYLA VOLANTE induced a 1-3-2 double-play to end the frame. Montclair had one final chance and put the leadoff runner on in the seventh after a STEPHANIE SERETIS pinch-hit single up the middle. DiLaurenzio re-entered and advanced to second on a groundout, but the final out was recorded on a grounder to third.

Law had a hit in both ends of the twinbill for Montclair, while ALI CAVALLARO struck out three in game one. Fredette had two hits in each game for the Kean.

The Red Hawks visit Ramapo College Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
