Feaster, Reiss Help Baseball Earn Split with Rowan

Montclair, NJ MILES FEASTER went 3-for-5 in the nightcap to help the Montclair State baseball team salvage a split against nationally-ranked Rowan Saturday.

Rowan (16-5, 3-1 NJAC) notched an 8-0 win in the opener before the Red Hawks (18-7, 3-1 NJAC) grinded out a 6-5 win in game two.

Neither side was able to score until the fifth inning, but the Red Hawks nearly staged a two-out rally in the second. Feaster and ANTHONY GUARINO singled, but a fly-out ended the threat. The Profs put runners on the corners in the third after Eric DiDomenico and Tyler Cannon singles. ETHAN GONZALEZ got out of trouble with a grounder and a foul out to end the inning.

The Profs broke through for four runs with two outs in the fifth inning, stringing together five consecutive singles. In the sixth, the visitors added to their lead, the big blow a double to right-center by Patrick Deficiani. BEN LEVINE settled in for the Red Hawks, throwing the final three innings while surrendering just one run.

JASON MOORE doubled to lead off the eighth before RYAN MCKENNA singled to place runners on first and third. Montclair State couldn't bring a runner in as Michael Shannon retired the next three batters. Down to their last inning, the Red Hawks loaded the bases on a single from MICHAEL MURPHY, a Feaster walk, and a Guarino single, but Moore bounced into a double-play to finish game one.

Guarino went 3-for-4 while Levine struck out for four in his three innings of relief.

Rowan wasted little time getting on the board in game two, notching three runs on four hits in the top of the first. Anthony Schooley had a two-run double, and Ryan Mostrangeli singled in an additional run. Montclair State answered back with four of their own. JORDEN JURKIEWICZ delivered a sacrifice to plate JOE NORTON, who led off with a single. Murphy was up next and singled in PETER COSENTINO for the second run, with Feaster also notching an RBI single. McKenna capped off the scoring, drawing a walk after working a full count.

The Red Hawks added a run in the third after Norton singled through the third base/shortstop hole, bringing home Moore. Moore had delivered a one-out double off the wall in left field. The Profs chipped away at the deficit, scratching a run across in the sixth, but BRIAN REISS fanned DiDomenico with the tying run on second to finish the sixth inning.

Montclair State pushed an additional run across in the home half of the sixth. Jurkiewicz legged out an infield hit and moved up a base on a throwing error with one down. After moving up on a passed ball, Feaster dropped a single into left field to extend the advantage to 6-4. Rowan countered in the seventh, with Chris Curcion driving in a run on a single up the middle. JUSTIN SILVA got out of the inning by inducing a 6-3 double play for the final two outs. Rowan put two runners on in the ninth, but closer JACK HAVESON notched his sixth save of the year with a strikeout of Deficiani to end the game. Haveson's save moved into a tie for third all-time on the single-season saves list.

Reiss earned his first win of the season by tossing six innings and allowing just four runs, while Haveson struck out four in his two innings. Norton and Cosentino recorded two hits as Feaster drove in two runs.

The Red Hawks will be home tomorrow, hosting Ramapo in a twinbill at 11:30 am.
