Baseball Concludes Season in NCAA Regional Tournament

Immaculata, Pa. – The Montclair State baseball team saw their 2022 season end with a 9-5 setback to Immaculata University in the NCAA Regional Tournament Saturday.

The Red Hawks (31-13) qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, and the 31 wins are the most in a season since notching 35 in the 2006 season. Immaculata (28-13) will face the loser of Keystone and Ithaca in an elimination game at approximately 1:30 pm tomorrow.

The host Mighty Macs put up two runs in the top of the first inning, with Joey Wright notching an RBI single and Josh Crowding delivering a sacrifice fly. The Red Hawks cut the lead in the half in the top of the second after JORDEN JURKIEWICZ and MICHAEL MURPHY led off with singles. The duo moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, and Jurkiewicz scooted home on an errant pick-off throw to second. In the second, Immaculata tacked on four runs, with Joey Sacco singling up the middle for two before Wright belted a two-run homer to left-center.

Montclair State got a run back in the third, with Murphy singling home PETER COSENTINO. Cosentino reached on a fielding miscue to lead off and moved up on an ANDREW OLLWERTHER single. The Mighty Macs took advantage of a fielding error in the fourth to make the score 7-2, but ETHAN GONZALEZ got a 4-3 double-play to limit the runs.

The Red Hawks loaded the bases in the fifth on walks by Cosentino and Ollwerther while MILES FEASTER reached on an error by the third baseman, all coming with no outs. Montclair State was able to scratch a run across as Jurkiewicz grounded into a 4-3 double-play, but Cosentino was able to score on the play. They weren't done, as Murphy grounded a ball to third base that went through the fielder's legs, allowing Feaster to score.

Cosentino singled to left with two outs in the sixth and moved up to second on a wild pitch before Feaster pushed him up another 90 feet on a single through the left side. Ollwerther lined a single to third base that scored Cosentino. Immaculata closed out the scoring in the eighth, tacking on two runs on hits by Giancarlo Palmieri and Wright.

Cosentino went 3-for-4 with three runs scored as Ollwerther and Murphy collected RBIs in the setback. Wright drove in five of the nine runs for the Mighty Macs.
