Field Hockey Tripped Up at No. 20 MIT

Sutera Nets First Goal of the Season

Cambridge, Mass. – The Montclair State field hockey team fell to No. 20 Massachusetts Institute of Technology 3-1 in their season-opener Thursday evening.

TORI SUTERA netted the lone goal the night for the Red Hawks, while LAUREN PICKUL stopped seven shots. Ashley Lederman tallied a goal and an assist for the Engineers in the win.

Pickul thwarted many chances for MIT early on, including denying a penalty stroke from Laura Schwendeman 32 seconds into the game. Schwendeman set up the game's first goal, as her insertion off a penalty corner led to a Lederman goal from the far side of the field. The Red Hawks pushed their first shot on goal with 2:09 left in the first, but LINSEY CHAMPA had her opportunity stopped by the keeper.

The Red Hawks limited MIT to just one shot on target in the second quarter, peppering Anna Duncan with four shots. The team was rewarded with the tying marker as Sutera poked a loose ball in the arc before rifling a shot to the near post for the equalizing tally.

Montclair State nearly grabbed the lead in the third period, but Duncan denied Champa off a corner in the 35th minute. The Engineers took the lead back seven minutes later, scoring twice in a 2:15 span. Faith Choe tallied the first goal as her attempt glanced off a defender's stick before Bailey McIntyre capped off the scoring in the 44th minute. Schwendeman inserted a corner to Lederman, who fired a shot that was deflected in off McIntyre at the far post.

Sutera paced the Red Hawks with four shots while CARLIE VAN TASSEL added three in the setback.

The Red Hawks visit Union College on Saturday afternoon, with game time set for 1 pm.
