Football Edged by No. 14 Delaware Valley, 14-6

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team battled No. 14 Delaware Valley University all game but, in the end, fell 14-6 Saturday afternoon at Sprague Field.

CLARENCE WILKINS hauled in his second touchdown in as many weeks for the lone score of the game for Montclair State, who held the nationally-ranked Aggies to just 213 yards.

The Red Hawks forced a three-and-out on their first defensive opportunity but gave the ball right back to DVU as ABELLANY MENDEZ fumbled with the Aggies recovering. The Aggie got to the Red Hawk's 16-yard line yet could not capitalize as JALIL TERRELL and JAKE CUSANO swatted passes to force a turnover on downs.

The teams traded punts before the Aggies pinned Montclair State at their own one, thanks to a great punt. On the drive's second play, Gerald Cruz forced another fumble, this time on MAKAI MICKENS, before Louis Barrios found Luan Avdijaj for a four-yard touchdown. Delaware Valley notched their third turnover of the first quarter, this time with Cole Kitchen picking off MASON MURDOCK near midfield. The Red Hawks got the ball back after KIMANI CARRINGTON notched his first career interception.

Both sides could not score the remainder of the half, but the Red Hawks forced another turnover on downs after the Aggies recovered a fumble inside the red zone. After a scoreless third quarter, Delaware Valley extended their lead to 14 on the first drive of the fourth. Using an 11-play, 58-yard drive, the Aggies punched the ball in as Jay White recorded a one-yard touchdown run.

The Red Hawks cut into the lead with 6:40 to go, with Murdock notching four completions during the run. He found ZACH LEWIS for 18 yards on second down before notching six-yard passes to Wilkins and REILLY NELSON. On second-and-10 from the Delaware Valley 28, Murdock hit Wilkins for a touchdown pass to trim the deficit to eight. The Red Hawks went for two, but Mickens was stuffed by the Aggies at the goal line and denied. After the kickoff, Montclair State could not get the ball back, with White gaining three yards on a fourth and one from the Montclair 40.

Murdock was 13-of-24 for 121 yards, while Mendez led the way with four grabs for 29 yards. Mendez added 34 yards on the ground, with Mickens picking up 40. MIKE RAMOS tallied 13 tackles, two pass breakups, and three tackles for loss, as OMARIE WILMORE recorded nine tackles.

The Red Hawks hit the road for the first time Saturday, visiting Salve Regina at 2 pm.
