Defense Keys Football in 31-14 Triumph Over Salve Regina

Newport, RI – The Montclair State football team recorded six interceptions as they knocked off Salve Regina 31-14 Saturday afternoon.

KIMANI CARRINGTON tallied a pair of interceptions while MIKE RAMOS led the defensive unit with 10 tackles for Montclair State (2-1).

The Seahawks broke through on their first possession of the afternoon, going 52 yards over 13 plays, capped off by a two-yard touchdown from quarterback Jake Stack. The Red Hawks answered back on the next possession, with MAKAI MICKENS gaining 36 yards on five carries. MASON MURDOCK hit ERIC COWAN for a first down on a third and six, and Mickens finished the possession with a six-yard touchdown run.

The teams traded three-and-outs before MICHAEL FITZPATRICK launched a 79-yard punt to pin Salve deep. After Salve Regina punted, the Red Hawks used a 17-play, 91-yard drive that took 9:19 to take their first lead of the day. This time ABELLANY MENDEZ plunged in from two yards out to give MSU a 14-7 advantage. Fitzpatrick hit a 24-yard field goal with 1:47 to go in the half but got the ball back off a muffed snap on a punt. From nine yards out, quarterback MASON MURDOCK hit MATT SPATUCCI with eight seconds to give Montclair a 24-7 lead entering halftime.

The Seahawks drove down the field with their first drive of the second half, but Stack was intercepted in the endzone by ALFRED WOODS. Salve Regina came away with a pick of their own and again entered the red zone. This time, Carrington recorded his first pick of the afternoon in the endzone for a touchback. The teams traded punts again, but Murdock's pass early in the fourth gave Salve the ball at the MSU 26. Facing a fourth and 10, Stack was intercepted again, this time by ADONIS MAY at the 27-yard line.

JALIL TERRELL notched an interception for the defense, but the Seahawks got a touchdown to make 24-14, as Stack linked up with Josh Letellier for a 12-yard score. The Seahawks forced a punt, and as they looked to make it a one-score game, Carrington stepped in front of a pass and took it back 32 yards for the score. On the final possession, Stack threw his sixth interception of the day, this time to BRENNAN RAY, to seal the game.

Mickens and Mendez combined for 85 yards and two scores, with Mickens adding five catches out of the backfield. Fitzpatrick punted seven times with a 45.3-yard average as OMARIE WILMORE, and GABE DELLACHIAIE added sacks on the day.
