Football Tripped Up by WPI

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team dropped a 10-0 decision to Worcester Polytechnic Institute Saturday afternoon.

Neither side was effective in the first half, combining for 11 punts and just 139 yards of combined offense. The Red Hawks (2-2) were able to get a turnover on downs after the second WPI drive but could not score. Montclair State's defense was big on that second drive as WPI started from the 30-yard line. They could only get as far as the 10 before the Red Hawks forced an incompletion on fourth down.

WPI forced their second fumble of the day on the second drive of the third quarter after MATT SPATUCCI was hit by Evan Wertz. The Engineers started the ensuing possession at the MSU 30, and, four plays later, scored as Stephen MacDonald hit Jay Mezzo for a 23-yard score. After a field goal pushed the hosts up 10, Montclair looked to get back into the game after BRENNAN RAY intercepted MacDonald and gave Montclair the ball at the 30. The possession was unsuccessful, as an incompletion handed the ball back to WPI.

NICHOLAS BURGESS led the defense with 13 tackles, while OMARIE WILMORE and JAKE CUSANO tallied solo sacks in the setback.

The Red Hawks open New Jersey Athletic Conference play next Saturday as they head to Salisbury for a 1 pm kickoff.
