Men's Soccer, Redlands End in 1-1 Draw

Redlands, Ca. – The No. 23 Montclair State men's soccer earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw with the University of Redlands Saturday evening.

AMER LUKOVIC netted his first goal of the season in the 69th minute to help the team salvage the draw.

Neither side put a shot on frame until the 21st minute when goalkeeper Seth Lawrence snared ANTHONY VIOLA's shot. Off a freekick, Lawrence again prevented the Red Hawks from scoring as he denied IAN CHESNEY from in close. The hosts broke through in the 40th minute, with Ethan Kovach scoring a goal from five yards outside the box and into the top corner of the goal.

After the goal, Redlands was reduced to 10 men thanks to a yellow card, and the momentum shifted to the Red Hawks' favor. The team outshot Redlands 8-1 over the final 45 minutes, with JANBI KAGHADO and JOSIAH CRAWFORD registering shots on goal early in the second frame. All the pressure paid off as Chesney linked up with Lukovic, who slotted the ball into the bottom left corner for his first marker of the year.

The Red Hawks were awarded four consecutive corner kicks but could not record a shot during the period. Red Hawks goalkeeper SHANE KEENAN prevented a scoring try in the 87th minute before Montclair State made one final push down the field. OWEN MURPHY nearly gave the team the lead in the waning moments, but a defender cleared his attempt off the line. Off the corner, JUSTIN GOLDBERG and Viola had tries but to no avail, and the game ended 1-1.

Viola led the Red Hawks with three shots, while Keenan made one save in the draw. Lawrence made five stops for Redlands.

The Red Hawks return to MSU Soccer Park Wednesday to host Moravian at 7 pm.
