Field Hockey Shuts Out No. 20 Vassar 4-0 To Earn First Win

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore TORI SUTERA scored twice and added an assist as the Montclair State field hockey team topped No. 20 Vassar 4-0 for their first win of the season Wednesday.

The Red Hawks (1-4) notched their first win over a ranked opponent since topping then-No. 4 TCNJ 2-1 on October 13, 2018. Both sides tallied 12 shots as LAUREN PICKUL made six saves to earn the victory, including the 175th of her career.

Montclair State held Vassar without a shot through the first quarter and finally broke through in the 18th minute. Off a corner, CARLY AMERMAN's try was stopped, but the rebound went to LINSEY CHAMPA. Champa dished to Sutera, who deftly made a pass to CARLIE VAN TASSEL, and the junior fired the shot for her first marker of the season. Over three minutes later, the roles reversed as MSU doubled its lead. GAB MAISTO took a long blast from outside the circle that caused a loose ball in the circle. Van Tassel lunged and poked the ball to Sutera, who chipped it in as she was falling down to make 2-0.

Pickul made two saves late in the second quarter to send the game into the half 2-0 before the Red Hawks added a third marker 45 seconds in the third. GAB MAISTO sent in a long shot from well outside the circle, and Sutera got a stick on it and deflected it past the keeper for her third goal of the year and second of the evening.

Vassar applied pressure, taking five shots during the third, but Pickul continued to preserve the clean sheet. As time ticked away in the third, the Brewers were whistled for a foul along the goalline, and MSU was awarded a penalty stroke. GAB MAISTO stepped up and scored for her first tally of the year. The Red Hawks kept the Brewers off the board in the fourth to earn their first clean sheet and first win of the season.

Sutera, CARLY AMERMAN, and SADIE EICHLIN led Montclair State with three shots, while Hailey Brigger had three for Vassar.

The Red Hawks continue their homestand Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg at 1 pm.
