Montclair, NJ – Sophomore GAB MAISTO notched a goal and an assist as the Montclair State field hockey team topped Muhlenberg 3-1 Saturday.

TORI SUTERA tallied her third goal over the last two games, while CARLY AMERMAN scored her first collegiate goal for the Red Hawks (2-4).

The Red Hawks wasted little time, firing four shots in the 3:41 before getting rewarded. After her initial attempt was blocked, Sutera poked the rebound in for her fourth marker of the year. Senior goalkeeper LAUREN PICKUL faced just one shot over the first 15 minutes, making a save. Montclair State doubled their lead in the 21st minute, as a foul brought up a penalty stroke. For the second straight game, Maisto stepped and took the shot. The goalkeeper got a piece of the attempt, but the ball trickled over the line giving MSU a 2-0 advantage.

The Montclair State defense kept Muhlenberg shot-less during the third quarter before the Red Hawks were awarded a corner with 1:03 left. Maisto inserted to Amerman at the top of the circle, and she rifled a shot past the goalkeeper for the goal. The Mules ratcheted the pressure in the fourth, taking three shots in the first 54 seconds. Pickul made three stops, but the Mules got one behind her in the 48th minute with Devon Eastlack scoring. Pickul made one final denial with 29 ticks to go to preserve the 3-1 triumph.

Sutera led the Red Hawks with three shots, while both of Maisto's attempts were on target. Pickul made five saves to earn her second victory of the season.

The Red Hawks close out their homestand tomorrow as they host RPI at 3 pm.
