Volleyball Edged by Wentworth in Castle Point Challenge Opener

Hoboken, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Wentworth Institute of Technology Friday afternoon.
 
The Red Hawks (4-4) took the first set 25-19 but the Leopards (5-3) won the next three 27-25, 30-28, and 25-21.
 
Montclair State grabbed 10 of the first 15 points, with the run capped off with a SKYE RAMSEY kill. The Leopards closed to within two, but Montclair State got five straight points, including three aces from rookie EMMA HATCHER. The team got to set point thanks to a pair of attack errors and an ace from Ramsey. WIT fended off one set point a LEAH HIGGINS put down a kill to give MSU the 1-0 lead.
 
The Red Hawks reeled off six consecutive points during a 12-4 spurt in the second stanza, including two kills from DELANEY ST. PIERRE and two aces from Higgins. The Leopards battled back, and a kill from Viviann Goulet made it 16-15 MSU. Four of the following five markers went to Montclair, and an unforced attack error pushed MSU in front 24-20. Wentworth stormed back, notching seven of the final eight points to even the match at one.
 
With WIT up 9-5 in the third, Hatcher was the catalyst again, notching eight straight markers. The period saw each side notch multiple points rallies, and MSU pulled even at 20 after consecutive aces from CARLY WATERMAN. Montclair had several chances to put the Leopards away, recording four different set-point opportunities. Wentworth took the frame after scoring the final three points, the last on a solo block from Riley Schoonmaker.
 
St. Pierre delivered four straight points in set four, and an unforced error made it 16-13 in favor of Montclair. The Leopards tallied five markers in a row, including three service aces to jump in front 18-16. SHELLEY EATON pinned down a kill from St. Pierre, and a ball-handling leveled things at 18, but WIT tallied seven of the final 10 points to claim the match.
 
Higgins notched 16 kills as St. Pierre posted a double-double of 22 assists and 18 digs. Hatcher notched a career-high five aces while MIA CAPRIGLIONE recorded three blocks. Helen Barthe had 15 kills and 15 digs for WIT in the victory.
 
The Red Hawks return to action tomorrow as they take on Randolph-Macon at 4 pm and host Stevens at 8 pm.
