Hoboken, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Randolph-Macon before falling to host Stevens during the final day of the Castle Point Challenge.
The opening frame against RMC was highly contested, with neither side leading by more than two until the last few points.
LEAH HIGGINS pinned down two kills, including one to make it 23-21 RMC, but the team could not complete the comeback. MSU went ahead 20-17 in the second set, but the Yellow Jackets evened things at 21. After a
MIA CAPRIGLIONE kill and an unforced attack error pushed Montclair up 23-20, RMC reeled off four straight points to go up 2-0.
Randolph-Macon used a 6-0 spurt in the third set to pull ahead 15-10, yet a kill from
GIANNA ARIAS coupled with two attack errors evened things at 19. Five of the following eight points went in Montclair's favor, but Grace Parker slammed a kill to tie the frame at 24. Higgins notched a kill before
KATIE RODMAN served up an ace to bring Montclair to a 2-1 deficit. The Yellow Jackets broke the fourth set open with a 7-2 run, and Montclair could not get any closer than four the rest of the way.
The Red Hawks could not dig themselves out of an early hole against Stevens, falling behind 19-7 before dropping the frame 25-10. The second stanza was similar as the Ducks jumped out to a 16-5 advantage. Taking advantage of unforced Stevens's errors, the Red Hawks got within 10 at 23-13 on an Arias kill before Stevens tallied the final two points. Stevens claimed the third set 25-10 to finish off a three-set win.
Carcich notched 13 assists against Stevens while adding eight digs.
The Red Hawks resume NJAC play Tuesday, visiting Ramapo at 7 pm.
