Arias, Carcich Post Career Nights as Volleyball Outlasts Ramapo

Mahwah, NJ – Senior GIANNA ARIAS tallied a career-high 15 kills as the Montclair State volleyball team outlasted Ramapo College in five sets Tuesday.

EMILY CARCICH handed out 61 assists for Montclair, the third highest in program history and the first 60+ assist match since Raisa Silva had 62 against Stockton on September 25, 2007. Silva also holds the single-game mark of 74 against FDU-Florham on October 28, 2006. The Red Hawks (5-6, 1-1 NJAC) won 25-16, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-10 over the Roadrunners (5-2, 1-1 NJAC).

Montclair State raced out to a 9-3 advantage, with SHELLEY EATON notching a kill and solo block during the run. The Red Hawks pushed the lead to nine at 21-13 on a kill from SKYE RAMSEY before consecutive Ramsey kills made it 23-14. Montclair would take the 1-0 lead on an unforced attack error. MSU led 12-8 in the second frame, but a 7-1 Ramapo rally put the hosts in front. MIA CAPRIGLIONE slammed down a kill to make it 16-15, but the Roadrunners embarked on a 6-0 run to break the set open. They would level the match at one on a kill from Stephanie Ross.

The Red Hawks fell behind 8-3 in the third, forcing the team into a timeout. The timeout worked as Montclair reeled off the following eight markers to grab an 11-8 edge. Ramsey pounded down a kill to extend the gap to five, but Ramapo notched the following 10 points to leap back in front. The Red Hawks dug deep and rallied, with LEAH HIGGINS and Arias combining for kills on the final five points to give the team a 2-1 lead. The Roadrunners evened the match thanks to a 10-3 spurt in the middle of the frame, and MSU could only get as close as four.

Entering the fifth and final stanza, Montclair embarked on a 5-0 run with Capriglione serving up two aces and Nadya Ackermanaian contributing two kills. Unforced errors coupled with a Capriglione kill made it 12-5, but Ramapo made it interesting and closed to 14-10. Arias and Carcich punctuated their career nights by linking up for a game-ending kill and giving MSU their first NJAC victory of the year.

Arias hit .370 (15-5-27) while Ramsey and Higgins combined for 33 kills from the outside spot. Higgins also was solid defensively, notching a career-high 21 digs with just one reception error as EMMA HATCHER tallied a team-high 26 digs. Caleigh Golabek had 17 kills for Ramapo, with Ross adding 10.

The Red Hawks resume New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Thursday as they host Rowan at 7 pm inside the Panzer Athletic Center.
