Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Battle to Rowan

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team fell to Rowan University in a hard-fought, four-set match Thursday.

NADYA ACKERMANIAN hit .529 (9-0-17) for the Red Hawks (5-7, 1-2 NJAC), while EMMA HATCHER tallied 13 digs. Rowan (12-1, 3-0 NJAC) claimed the match 25-14, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23.

After a solo block by rookie MIA CAPRIGLIONE brought MSU to within one in the opening frame, Rowan reeled off the following nine markers to take a double-digit lead. Montclair would get as close as eight off a kill from Ackermanian, but Brianna Newson pinned down a set from Brooke Adams to give Rowan a 1-0 lead. Montclair grabbed a 10-9 lead in the second stanza, but the visitors embarked on an 8-2 spurt to leap in front 17-12. The Red Hawks clawed to within a pair thanks to consecutive service aces from LEAH HIGGINS; however, they couldn't get any closer, and Rowan finished the frame off with a 5-2 rally.

With Rowan up 4-3 in the third, Hatcher gave the team a 9-4 advantage with six straight tallies. Consecutive attack errors stretched the lead to 13-6, yet the Profs weren't out and got within three. Three straight unforced errors aided by a double-block from GIANNA ARIAS and CARLY WATERMAN extended MSU's lead to 18-12 before Capriglione and Waterman notched back-to-back kills to go up 22-13. LEAH HIGGINS put MSU back into the match with a kill off an EMILY CARCICH set to make it 2-1 Rowan.

The Profs raced out to a 10-6 advantage in the fourth set before using a 5-0 spurt to extend the gap to 17-10. Montclair didn't go away, and three attack errors and two double-team rejections shrunk the deficit to three at 17-14. Higgins pounded home two kills before Rodman served up back-to-back aces to give MSU a 20-18 lead, but Rowan used a 6-2 run to claim the match,

Higgins led the MSU with 10 kills while Arias notched eight blocks (two solo and six block assists). She became the first Red Hawk in nearly five years to tally eight blocks, with Caitlin Lange doing it on October 31, 2017, also against Rowan. Natalie Ogden led all hitters with 19 kills as Simone Sparano picked up 16 digs.

After a weekend off, the Red Hawks resume NJAC action on Tuesday as they head to Stockton for a 7 pm first serve.
