No. 12/14 Women's Soccer Blanks NJCU 3-0 in NJAC Opener

Jersey City, NJ – Junior LAUREN ERNST scored 1:24 into the match as the No. 12/14 Montclair State women's soccer team shut out New Jersey City University 3-0 in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

KYLIE PRENDERGAST and TARA LAMBERT added goals for Montclair State (8-0-0, 1-0-0 NJAC), who outshot NJCU (3-3-3, 0-1-0 NJAC) 33-4.

The Red Hawks wasted little time as AILEEN CAHILL received a pass on the left side outside the 18-yard box. Cahill sent a ball into the box to Ernst, who slipped a low shot past the goalkeeper with a defender draped around her to give MSU the 1-0 advantage. The Red Hawks continued to apply pressure, with KYLIE PRENDERGAST nearly doubling the lead in the 15thminute.

Goalkeeper Lorraine Valenzuela kept NJCU in the game with four stops in the middle of the frame. She denied KERRI DRISCOLL and Prendergast in the 30th minute, punching Prendergast's try out for a corner kick. Off a long throw-in from KIMBERLY CAMPBELL, AILEEN CAHILL and JULIE BAKER had consecutive opportunities thwarted by Valenzuela.

Staked to the 1-0 lead at the half, the Red Hawks doubled their advantage in the 55th minute. HALEY MARTIN blasted a goal kick, and JESSICA DESARNO got on the end of it and poked it forward. Prendergast corralled a loose ball and dribbled in, and fired a shot that eluded the goalkeeper for her third marker of the year. Montclair State finished off the scoring in the 75th minute. ASHLEY DEFRANCESCO took a shot from outside the box that rang off the crossbar. Valenzuela could not grab the rebound, and Lambert scored into the vacant net for her first tally of the year.

Ernst led the Red Hawks with seven shots while Prendergast added five. Martin made one save for MSU to earn the win, while Valenzuela made 16.

MSU hosts Stockton in NJAC action Wednesday, with the first kick scheduled for 4 pm at MSU Soccer Park.
