Field Hockey Knocks Off Stevens in Overtime, 2-1

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State field hockey team scored a fourth-quarter goal to tie the game before a penalty stroke in overtime handed the squad a 2-1 victory over in-state rival Stevens Wednesday.

The Red Hawks (5-4) outshot Stevens (5-5) 21-5 during the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After neither side put a shot on cage in the first quarter, the Ducks broke through in the 24th minute. Off a scramble, Elizabeth Sullivan poked a loose ball with Sarah Korczukowski. Korczukowski threw a shot to the goal, and it went in, giving Stevens the 1-0 lead.
  • LAUREN PICKUL kept it 1-0 with a save in the 27th minute before MSU nearly tied it late in the second as goalkeeper Emily Franco denied CARLIE VAN TASSEL. With 14 seconds left in the half, GAB MAISTO had an attempt that was high, and Montclair went into the break down one.
  • Montclair had the first try in the third quarter before Pickul made 34th and 39th minute saves to keep it a one-goal game. MSU peppered Franco with attempts late in the third, with LINSEY CHAMPA and LINDSEY BICHER notching shots on goal.
  • The Red Hawks ratcheted the pressure in the fourth, outshooting Stevens 8-0. They broke through at the 48:52 mark, with Champa notching her first goal of the year off a feed from TORI SUTERA.
  • The game went into overtime, and MSU was awarded a penalty corner, but Franco stopped Bicher. On the other end, Emily Smart went one-on-one with Pickul, and the senior came out of her cage, made a sprawling poke check, and kept the game going.
  • After killing off a penalty, the Red Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke. Van Tassel stepped up and rifled a shot high that eluded Franco for the game-winning goal.
