Football Takes Down Thiel, 27-6

Montclair, NJ – MAKAI MICKENS scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, and JALIL TERRELL recovered a blocked punt for a score as the Montclair State football team topped Thiel College 27-6 Saturday.

The Red Hawks' defense limited Thiel to 140 yards total while outgaining them 331-140.

Montclair State forced a three-and-out on Thiel's second drive, and the Red Hawks began to march down the field. MASON MURDOCK linked up with receiver REILLY NELSON for 39 yards, bringing the ball to the Thiel 20. On the next play, Murdock was intercepted at the 11-yard line, and Raymond Jackson returned the interception 89 yards to put the visitors up 6-0. BRENNAN RAY prevented the extra point by storming through the line and blocking it.

The Red Hawks began the second quarter with the ball and capitalized with a touchdown. During an 8-play, 69-yard drive that took 6:25, Mickens punched the ball in for one yard out to push MSU in front. The running back set up the score the play before, hauling in a screen pass on 2nd and 7 from the 15 and scampering 14 yards down the sideline.

On the ensuing kickoff, KEYSHAWN DIXON forced a fumble that DYLAN SHARKEY recovered, setting Montclair up with the ball at the Thiel 40. Facing a 4th and 11 from the Thiel 30-yard line, Murdock found CLARENCE WILKINS and went the rest of the way for a 30-yard touchdown. Montclair would hold Thiel off the scoreboard for the rest of the half and entered the break leading 14-6.

The teams traded punts to start the third quarter before the Red Hawks pinned Thiel back deep in their own territory. On 2nd and 10, MIKE RAMOS blitzed from his safety position and sacked Owen Trumbull, and a short pass brought up fourth down. The Tomcats punted, but STEVEN TAFURI blocked it back to the three-yard line. Terrell scooped it up and went into the endzone, giving Montclair a 21-point lead.

Ramos was around the ball again, intercepting Trumbull's pass early in the fourth quarter. The pick set MSU up at their own 45 and punched the ball in seven plays later. After a 34-yard completion to Wilkins, Mickens capped off the scoring with a four-yard run to establish the 27-6 margin. Thiel had one more possession, but NICHOLAS BURGESS returned the ball to the home side with an interception.

Mickens and Mendez finished with a combined 118 yards on the ground, while Wilkins hauled in three passes for 103 yards. Nelson finished the day with four grabs for 84 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Burgess had eight tackles as Ramos recorded six. DIMITRI PALI and Ramos recorded sacks as five different Red Hawks broke up passes on the day.

The Red Hawks return to Sprague Field Saturday as they host Delaware Valley at noon.
