Carter, Vero Lead Women's Basketball To NJAC Win Over Rowan

Montclair, NJ – NICKIE CARTER scored a game-high 31 points as the Montclair State women's basketball took a 19-point lead into halftime en route to a 73-67 win over Rowan Wednesday.
 
Montclair State (8-7, 5-3 NJAC) outscored Rowan 50-31 over the first 20 minutes to earn the victory,
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 5-4, Montclair went on a 16-4 spurt to break the game open. OLIVIA VERO netted seven points, while Carter added nine on the run.
  • SHANNON HUGHES knocked down a triple with 38 seconds left in the first to extend the lead to 16 before the two sides combined to make seven free throws over the final 27 seconds of the frame to send MSU into the second up 29-18.
  • After surrendering a bucket to begin the second, Carter kickstarted a 7-0 run with a layup. The senior tallied 11 consecutive points during a three-minute stretch that pushed the gap to 21 at 44-23.
  • The Red Hawks had the lead swell to 22 late in the first half, but Savannah Holt beat the buzzer and knocked down a three to establish the 19-point margin.
  • Rowan went on a run opening the third, scoring nine straight points and keeping Montclair scoreless over the first 3:44. Hughes stopped the rally with a three-pointer, and a TERESA WOLAK free-throw extended the lead to 15.
  • The Profs tallied nine of the final 13 markers of the third stanza and whittled the deficit to six on the heels of a 6-0 run entering the final frame.
  • Rowan got to seven on a layup, but Carter converted from deep off a feed from MEGAN DUFFY, stretching the margin back to double figures. Rowan closed to six multiple times, but Vero and Carter tallied clutch baskets down the stretch to cement the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Carter narrowly missed a double-double, going for 31 points and eight rebounds. The 31 points were one off her season-high and three off her career-best.
  • Vero tallied her first double-double of the year, going for a career-high 15 points with 13 boards. The Staten Island, NY, native added six assists and five blocks.
  • The 22 made free-throws were one off of the season-high set against Stockton Saturday.

The Red Hawks head to Union, NJ Saturday to face Kean in New Jersey Athletic Conference play at 3 pm.
