Men's Basketball Takes Down Kean in NJAC Road Contest, 86-81

Union, NJ – The Montclair State men's basketball team held onto the lead for the final 38:32 as they knocked off Kean 86-81 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Saturday.

MIKE JACKSON had a team-best 26 points for the Red Hawks (13-3, 7-2 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars tied the game at two on a Griffin Barker layup, and Montclair grabbed the lead back seven seconds later on a KEYON PRYCE fastbreak jumper. The Pryce bucket started an 8-0 Red Hawk run, punctuated with trifectas from STEVEN BREEMAN and SAMAR ABDULLAH.
  • Kean (13-3, 6-3 NJAC) responded with six consecutive Barker points to draw within three. Montclair State extended the gap to nine thanks to three-pointers from KYREE HENRY and GREG ECK, but Kean closed to four on a D.J. Alicea layup.
  • The Cougars clawed to within a point on a Letrell West jumper with 1:16 left in the first period; however, Montclair converted five free throws in the final 1:07 to grab a 38-32 advantage entering halftime.
  • The Red Hawks held a 25-16 advantage on the boards in the first half and shot 7-of-19 from behind the arc.
  • Jackson heated up in the second half, netting the first seven Red Hawk points of the stanza. The Cougars made it a one-possession game with a West triple before an 8-0 spurt stretched the gap to 11. Eck recorded four points during the run, with Henry and KIERAN FLANAGAN netting points.
  • The advantage hovered around double-digits for most of the second period and got back to 12 with 3:48 left on a FRANCISCO PAULINO jumper. With 2:22 left, Jackson sunk a pair from the free-throw line, putting the team up 80-69.
  • Kean didn't go away, tallying seven of the following nine points, drawing to six with under a minute to go. After Pryce knocked down two from the charity stripe, Kean whittled the deficit to three on a Barker layup and West three-pointer.
  • The Cougars couldn't get any closer after, with Breeman converting a pair from the line with six ticks left.
