Women's Basketball Races Past Rutgers-Newark

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team led wire-to-wire en route to an 84-65 triumph over Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Wednesday.
 
NICKIE CARTER returned after a two-game absence to lead Montclair State (10-9, 7-5 NJAC) with a game-high 26 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks opened up a 10-0 lead over the first 2:37, with Carter hitting a pair of three-pointers during the run. Montclair State extended the gap to 14 midway through the period as ISABELLA ORLANDO knocked down a triple.
  • The advantage swelled to 20 with just over a minute left, with Carter converting a jumper in the paint. Montclair limited Rutgers-Newark to eight markers over the first 10 minutes while shooting 60% from the floor.
  • Montclair maintained the lead in the second, with the margin hovering between 15-20 for the duration of the stanza. MEGAN DUFFY went 4-for-7 during the second, pouring in nine points.
  • The Scarlet Raiders brought the lead down to 10 with 7:09 to go in the third, but Montclair quickly answered with a 10-0 spurt, punctuated by a TERESA WOLAK jumper. Orlando gave Montclair a 16-point edge entering the fourth, knocking down a three with 24 ticks left in the frame.
  • An 8-2 rally by Rutgers-Newark in the fourth brought them as close as 11, but Orlando hit a jumper before Carter hit a three-pointer to stop the run. Newark could not get any closer the rest of the way, with Carter hitting six free throws in the final two minutes to finish the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Carter was a perfect 13-for-13 from the free-throw line. She is one of four in program to shoot 100% from the line with 10 or more makes, joining Katie Sire, Melissa Tobie, and Kisandra Ayanbeku.
  • Duffy chipped in 13 points, with Orlando and MADELYN MCCREA adding 11 off the bench. Orlando was 3-for-7 from three.
  • The team was 27-of-38 from the line, with the 27 makes establishing a new season-high.
  • OLIVIA VERO matched her career-high with six blocks while adding nine rebounds.
