Ewing, NJ – STEVEN BREEMAN scored his 1,000th career collegiate point as the Montclair State men's basketball team clipped The College of New Jersey 69-64 Saturday afternoon.
Breeman hit the plateau with 38 seconds remaining in the second half and is now sitting at 1,001 overall points. He tallied 84 points during his freshman campaign at Moravian and is up to 917 at Montclair State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After giving up the first basket, Montclair (17-3, 11-2 NJAC) reeled off the following nine points. The Lions answered back with eight of their own before a three-pointer inched them in front 18-17 with a shade under 10 minutes left in the half.
- Trailing 20-17, MIKE JACKSON notched a three-pointer to kickstart an 8-0 spurt. AMARI MILLS finished the run with a layup, and the lead grew to 10 on a fastbreak jumper from KEYON PRYCE.
- Breeman polished off the first half with a three-pointer with 40 ticks left to send Montclair into the locker room up 37-29. The Red Hawks shot 43.3% from the floor in the opening period, as TCNJ shot at a 44.4% clip.
- The Lions opened the second stanza with a 14-6 spurt, erasing the halftime deficit over the first 4:30. KIERAN FLANAGAN was fouled on the next trip down the floor and hit both shots before Jackson hit from deep, extending the lead to five.
- After TCNJ closed to within three, neither side could score over the next three minutes. Pryce and Breeman converted jumpers to snap the scoreless drought, yet the Lions responded by trimming the gap to two at 56-54.
- A Breeman jumper with 2:41 to play stretched the lead back to six, but the next four markers went in favor of TCNJ, making it 62-60 with 1:22 left. Coming out of a timeout, Flanagan hit one of the game's biggest shots, a three-pointer, to extend the Red Hawks' lead to five at 1:09.
- The Red Hawks forced a miss, and Breeman was fouled. He hit both attempts, with the first putting him at 1,000 points. TCNJ could not get any closer than four the rest of the way, as Pryce and Flanagan made free throws with under 25 seconds left to preserve the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Red Hawks snapped a seven-game road losing streak to TCNJ, winning in Ewing for the first time since February 19, 2014.
- Breeman had a team-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Pryce and Jackson added 13, with Jackson grabbing six boards.
- Flanagan again filled the box score, putting up eight points, six rebounds, and four assists.
