Second Half Surge Sends Men's Basketball Past Rutgers-Newark

Newark, NJ – KYREE HENRY scored a team-high 17 points as the Montclair State men's basketball team outscored Rutgers-Newark 43-24 in the second half en route to a 73-55 triumph Monday.
 
STEVEN BREEMAN recorded his third consecutive double-double for Montclair State (12-2, 6-1 NJAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite taking an early 5-0 lead, Montclair found themselves in a hole as the hosts countered with the following nine points. Montclair closed to within one on a triple by MIKE JACKSON, but Rutgers-Newark tallied the following six markers to grab a 21-14 lead.
  • The Scarlet Raiders pulled in front by nine with 6:24 remaining in the opening period, which was their largest advantage of the day. After a timeout, Montclair went on a 12-2 spurt over the next six minutes, inching back in front.
  • Shy'heed Jenkins-Floyd stopped the rally with a jumper with six ticks remaining in the period, sending Rutgers-Newark into the break with a slim one-point advantage.
  • Montclair opened the second stanza with the first six markers, opening up a five-point lead. Henry pushed the advantage to double-figures with three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to make the score 44-33.
  • Rutgers-Newark didn't go away, cutting the lead in half on the heels of a 10-4 spurt. The hosts got as close as seven at 53-47 with 8:40 to go, but three points each from KIERAN FLANAGAN and KEYON PRYCE extended the gap to 13.
  • Henry and Pryce combined for the team's final nine points as the defensive unit held Rutgers-Newark to one field goal over the final 5:16.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Breeman tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds, as Pryce added 16 and four assists.
  • Henry paced the reserve unit with 17 points and tacked on a career-high eight rebounds.
  • After shooting 35.3% in the first half, the Red Hawks shot 61.5% (16-of-26) in the second.

The Red Hawks return home to host Rowan University in NJAC action Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
