Women's Basketball Breezes Past Rutgers-Newark

Newark, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team outscored Rutgers-Newark 66-29 over the final three quarters en route to an 84-39 triumph Monday.
 
The Red Hawks (7-7, 4-3 NJAC) received 50 points from their reserves in the victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair State, who never trailed, opened up an 8-3 lead early behind four points from TERESA WOLAK. The Scarlet Raiders closed to within four, but MSU notched five of the final seven markers to grab an eight-point advantage entering the second period.
  • Rutgers-Newark got to within four at the 7:26 mark of the frame before Montclair broke the game open with a 9-0 spurt. NICKIE CARTER led the way with five points during the game-altering stretch.
  • Montclair continued to pour it on and used a solid defensive effort to limit Rutgers-Newark to one field goal over the final 5:28 of the period. The Red Hawks outscored Rutgers-Newark 13-2 over that time, opening up a 22-point halftime advantage.
  • The Red Hawks shot over 50% from the floor in the opening half and held Rutgers-Newark to just nine made baskets.
  • The guests rode the wave of the 13-2 rally into the third period, tallying the first 11 points. The run was capped off by a layup and free from MADELYN MCCREA.
  • McCrea netted the first three markers of the fourth stanza as rookie GENEVIEVE FARA drained a three-pointer with 4:41 left to push the lead to 74-31. The Red Hawks capped off the scoring late in the contest with a three-pointer from newcomer JOCELYN RIOS.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Strollo poured in a career-high 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, with McCrea adding 13 points and six boards.
  • The Red Hawks matched a season-high with 84 points while setting a new season-high with 32 made field goals and 55 rebounds.
  • Carter led the team with 14 points, with OLIVIA VERO notching eight rebounds, six points, and four assists.

The Red Hawks host Rowan University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Wednesday, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 pm.
