Field Hockey Blanks Western Connecticut State, 3-0

Danbury, Conn. – The Montclair State University field hockey team surrendered zero shots as they topped Western Connecticut State University 3-0 on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite outshooting the Wolves 15-0 at the half, the Red Hawks (5-9) could not find the back of the cage until there were 90 seconds left in the half. CARLY AMERMAN intercepted a clearing pass near midfield and sped through the defense. Amerman got into the circle and sent a pass to SAMI BLOOM. Bloom turned and fired, beating the goalkeeper near post for the 1-0 lead.
  • Of the Red Hawks' 15 first-half shots, 10 were on frame, and they held a 4-0 edge in penalty corners over the first 30 minutes.
  • Montclair continued to apply pressure in the second half and was rewarded 9:25 into the frame. Amerman once again was involved, cutting across the field to get in the way of a pass. She dribbled to about 15 yards before sending a ball across the circle. TORI SUTERA was there and quickly tapped it past the keeper, doubling the lead.
  • The Red Hawks capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter with just under five minutes remaining. GAB MAISTO inserted a corner to Amerman, who sent a shot towards the goal. KYLIE COMPTON was able to redirect the attempt into the goal, giving Montclair a 3-0 advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Amerman had three assists, becoming the 15th person to notch three or more assists in a game. Stephanie Lewis was the last Red Hawk with three assists in a game on September 25, 2013.
  • The zero shots allowed are the fewest since the team surrendered zero against DeSales on September 2, 2018.
  • SIDNEY DENAFO made her collegiate debut and recorded the shutout.
FROM THE FIELD
"I'm proud of our team for showing up with confidence and discipline tonight. We did a good job finding new space, attacking at different angles, and consistently seeking scoring opportunities. Congratulations to Sydney Denafo on her first career shutout. Our back four defenders, CARLY AMERMAN, KYLIE COMPTON, SADIE EICHLIN, and ANNA DONALDSON, did an outstanding job stopping the ball before the circle and denying West Conn any scoring opportunities." – Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly.
