Volleyball Downs NJCU For First NJAC Victory

Jersey City, NJ – The Montclair State University volleyball team notched their first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory with a straight-set win over NJCU Tuesday.

The Red Hawks (9-11, 1-4 NJAC) snapped a seven-match losing streak with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair fell behind 9-8 before EMILY CARCICH tallied six consecutive points. SKYE RAMSEY had two kills, while RACHEL CURRAN and GABBY KONRAD added kills during the run. A kill by NJCU stopped the run before EMMA HATCHER delivered seven straight markers. Hatcher tallied four service aces as Montclair opened up a double-digit lead.
  • The Gothic Knights countered with seven of the following eight points before ZOEY HORN pounded down a set from Carcich. Horn and Curran teamed for a block to bring up set point, and Konrad fired an ace to claim the opening frame.
  • The Red Hawks raced out to a 9-3 lead in set two, as ADDISON CASTLES extended the gap to nine with potent serving. The Gothic Knights got as close as seven, but Montclair embarked on a 7-1 rally. NJCU fended off four set points, but Curran slammed down a kill to finish set two.
  • Montclair was all over the hosts in the final frame, reeling off 13 of the opening 14 points. KATIE RODMAN had three aces as Curran added a pair of kills. The lead swelled to 17 on a LILY THOMAS kill, and Curran ended the match with a kill.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The 14 service aces were one off the season-high set against FDU-Florham on September 6. Hatcher led the way with seven, as Rodman added four.
  • Curran hit .355 (13-2-31), and Ramsey hit .318 (9-2-22).
  • Rodman, Carcich, and Hatcher contributed 11 digs each.
FROM THE FIELD
Tonight was a solid all-around performance. I thought Emily (Carcich) and Gabby (Konrad) did a great job mixing the offense and involving the middles a lot more. Our defense did a good job at keeping us in system, and we worked on minimizing our attack errors, especially in transition. I thought Emma (Hatcher), Katie (Rodman), and Addi (ADDISON CASTLES) did very well serving tough tonight, which kept them out of system." – Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.
