Montclair, NJ – The No. 6 Montclair State University men's soccer team blanked Rutgers-Newark 4-0 on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks scored twice in 12 seconds in the eighth minute to open up a 2-0 lead. For the first goal, ENIR RADONCIC sent in a long ball that AMER LUKOVIC flicked on. The pass found ANDRE SHELTON, who rifled a shot by the Newark goalkeeper.
- Montclair corralled a loose ball off the restart, and REED KARSEN changed field position with a long cross. Lukovic was on the receiving end, and the junior did what he does best and scored, doubling the Red Hawk advantage.
- Lukovic nearly made it three in the 10th minute, but his bicycle try was wide. ALFREDO ROJAS' shot from outside the box was saved and went out for a corner. OWEN MURPHY made a great attempt in the 20th minute, but his shot rang off the crossbar.
- Rojas was rewarded with a goal in the 39th minute. The Scarlet Raiders failed to clear the ball out off a corner kick, and Rojas blasted a shot from outside the 18, making it 3-0.
- Montclair held a commanding 10-1 edge in shots over the first half while attempting both corner kicks.
- Lukovic picked up his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute as he potted a pass from GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO and fired a hard shot into the back of the net. SALEM ELLISY was denied in the 71st minute before Rojas' try sailed over the bar.
- The Scarlet Raiders threatened late in the game, but SHANE KEENAN kept them off the scoreboard with stops in the 74th and 76th minutes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Lukovic raised his goal to 20 on the season, becoming the fourth person in program history to hit 20 goals. With his 44 points on the season, the Clifton, NJ native is seventh on the single-season points list.
- Shelton's goal was his third of the season and the first game-winning marker of the year.
- Keenan preserved the clean sheet with three saves.
FROM THE FIELD
"We talked to the team about trying to get off to a quick start and put teams away early, and I think we were able to do that, allowing some other guys to get some action. We're just looking forward to the weekend now, so we have TCNJ and Amherst, and we'll take it one game at a time." – Head Coach Todd Tumelty.
