No. 6 Men's Soccer Edged By No. 18 Amherst 2-1

Montclair, NJ – The No. 6 Montclair State University men's soccer team was edged by No. 18 Amherst College 2-1 on Sunday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mammoths broke through in the 14th minute, as goalkeeper SHANE KEENAN made an initial save, but the rebound was put in. The lead doubled in the 17th minute, as a goal was put in despite the official on the sideline signaled for offside.
  • The Red Hawks' first shot on frame came from REED KARSEN in the 18th minute, and a try by ALFREDO ROJAS in the 32nd minute sailed high.
  • The Mammoths fired the final five shots of the period but could not convert. Entering halftime, the guests held a 10-6 advantage in shots.
  • Montclair applied pressure early in the second half but could not muster a shot on goal. The Red Hawks finally broke through in the 74th minute. AMER LUKOVIC was fouled inside the 18, and Montclair was awarded a penalty kick. The junior stepped up and converted the penalty kick trimming the deficit in half.
  • Lukovic had one last chance for the tying goal as he drew a foul on the cusp of the box. He stepped up for the free kick, but his try was. The Red Hawks could not find the equalizing tally and dropped their non-conference finale 2-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lukovic has now scored in all but one game this season, raising his nation-leading goal total to 23. He also led the way with four shots in the game.
  • Keenan made three saves in the setback.
FROM THE FIELD
"
We knew it was going to be a tough challenge to take on Amherst with back to back games when they didn't play for a week. I am proud that we never gave up. We had chances in the second half to tie the game. We will learn from this and look forward to William Paterson on Wednesday." - Head Coach Todd Tumelty.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks will battle William Paterson at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday, with the game time scheduled for 7 pm in Harrison, NJ.
