Volleyball Tops Rutgers-Camden In Straight Sets

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University volleyball notched a crucial straight-set win over Rutgers-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the score tied at seven in the opening frame, Montclair (12-11, 2-4 NJAC) reeled off three straight markers, including kills from SKYE RAMSEY and ZOEY HORN. The lead grew to 13-9 on a kill from RACHEL CURRAN before the visitors battled back to take a slim 17-16 advantage.
  • The guests used a 5-1 rally to pull in front 20-17, with Ramsey pinning down an EMILY CARCICH set to stop the run. The kill sent Montclair on a 7-0 spurt, with a block error bringing up set point. The Scarlet Raptors fended one off, but Ramsey notched a kill to hand Montclair the opening set.
  • Horn capped off a set-starting 5-1 run with an ace, but Rutgers-Camden fought back to inch in front 11-10. The back-and-forth period saw a 5-0 run by RU-C go up by three, with Montclair responding with five of the next six to pull even at 17.
  • The frame saw ties at 18, 19, 21, and 22 before Curran gave Montclair the ball back with a kill. An attack error brought up set point, and Curran notched the kill that gave Montclair a 25-22 set victory.
  • Montclair opened up with a 6-2 run in the final stanza, capped by a double block from SOFIA DIPROFIO and Horn. The lead swelled to six on a Curran kill, but the Scarlet Raptors refused to go away and evened the period at 18.
  • The two sides traded the following four points, and a Ramsey kill made it 23-21. Rutgers-Camden answered back with two markers to tie things at 23, but Ramsey and Curran delivered consecutive kills to clinch the match for the home side.

FROM THE COURT
"Tonight was a solid all around game. I thought we did a great job from the service line causing Camden to be out of system. We did a great job blocking and playing defense around it. I thought Skye and Rachel did an excellent job with their attacking and Emily kept finding the hot hitter in crucial times. I am proud of the effort tonight in executing what we had practiced and prepared for the night before." Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.
