Football Clips William Paterson, 14-13

Wayne, NJ – The Montclair State University football team clipped William Paterson 14-13 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trading punts to start the game, Montclair got to the William Paterson 44 before ANDREW SANBORN was intercepted. The Red Hawks (4-3, 3-1 NJAC) picked off William Paterson on the ensuing possession as ALEX BUCHWALD came down with the interception at the 12.
  • Early in the second, Montclair started at the William Paterson 42 after a short punt. A 38-yard pass from AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN to CLARENCE WILKINS placed the ball at the three, but the Red Hawks offense came away with no points after a missed field goal.
  • A 14-play, 56-yard drive that took over five minutes off the clock gave Montclair a 7-0 lead late in the first half. Running back HENRY LEWIS capped the drive off with a four-yard plunge for a score, and ANDREW MYERSON hit the extra point. The Pioneers responded with a 70-yard touchdown, sending the teams into the break level at seven.
  • On their first possession of the second half, Montclair chewed up 8:33 off the clock, going 74 yards in 14 plays. An ABELLANY MENDEZ fumble inside the red zone handed the ball back to the Pioneers. The Pioneers notched their takeaway of the day, with McLaughlin getting intercepted with 9:31 remaining in the fourth.
  • The hosts grabbed their first lead off the interception thanks to a 39-yard touchdown pass. They could not connect on the extra point, as KEYSHAWN DIXON blocked the try. Trailing for the first time, Montclair started at their own 16-yard line and moved down the field, with McLaughlin hitting Wilkins for 13 yards on the first play of the drive.
  • Mendez rushed up the middle for 16 yards before McLaughlin scampered for 13 more down to the WPU 28. Mendez finished the drive the right way, going 28 yards up the middle for the score. GREG CASIMIR knocked down the extra point, giving Montclair a 14-13 edge.
  • The Pioneers entered their two-minute drill as they started on the eight-yard line. They got to the Montclair 36 on three pass completions, but a hurry from DIMITRI PALI forced an incompletion. ARNOLD YOUNG came up with a sack on the next play, and two plays later, Buchwald snagged his second pick of the game in the endzone as the Pioneers chucked up a Hail Mary to seal the win.
