Field Hockey Blanks Ramapo 4-0 In NJAC Win

Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State University field hockey team notched their first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory with a 3-0 triumph over Ramapo College on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (7-10, 1-3 NJAC) broke through midway through the opening period. KELLY WESTERVELT fired from a distance, but the ball went high in the air towards the goal. It eluded the defender, and SAMI BLOOM was there to poke the loose ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead.
  • Montclair nearly added a second, but a defender blocked Bloom's try in the 12th minute. Ramapo applied pressure late in the frame, but goalkeeper MCKENNA LAMAN made three saves in the final 12 seconds to keep it at a 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Hawks continued to hunt for the second marker in the second period as they outshot Ramapo 8-0. They continued to be thwarted by the Roadrunners goalkeeper, who made eight first-half saves.
  • Montclair doubled their advantage 4:24 into the third quarter. Bloom and KYLIE COMPTON had their initial attempts stopped off a penalty corner, but Compton deposited the rebound for her fourth marker of the year.
  • With 3:43 left in the third, Montclair made it 3-0. NATALIE SURMA reverse-chipped a pass across the circle to CARLIE VAN TASSEL. The senior rifled home the pass to extend the lead to three as time was ticking down.
  • The lead swelled to four as Van Tassel added her second marker of the game. A long pass from outside the circle bounced around before Van Tassel corralled it, dribbled through two defenders, and potted her second goal of the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Van Tassel tallied her second multi-goal game of the season and the fifth of her career.
  • The Red Hawk defense clamped down and did not surrender a shot after the first quarter.
  • Laman made three saves for her second shutout of the season.
FROM THE FIELD
"Proud of our team for a complete game tonight. I thought we did a good job making adjustments in the second half and using our passing game to create scoring opportunities. Congratulations to McKenna on the shut out!" - Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly.
