Football Knocks Off Kean In NJAC Matchup

Union, NJ – HENRY LEWIS rushed for a career-high 176 yards and a touchdown as the Montclair State University football team took down Kean University 27-14 on Saturday.

The Red Hawks (3-2, 2-0 NJAC) rushed for a season-high 275 yards in the triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides exchanged punts over the first four drives before the Red Hawks broke through with 5:18 left in the first quarter. After taking over on their 20-yard line, Lewis ripped off an 80-yard touchdown, putting the guests in front.
  • On the ensuing possession, Robbie Nunguesser was picked off by NATE EXIL deep inside Kean's territory. The Cougars' defense clamped down, holding Montclair to a 28-yard field goal from GREG CASIMIR. Staked to the lead, the Red Hawks forced a punt and, after a 19-yard ZACH LEWIS return, set up at the Kean 36. Four plays later, ANDREW SANBORN hit CLARENCE WILKINS for an 18-yard score, putting Montclair up 17-0.
  • Both teams turned the ball over on their first play, as Nunguesser was stripped by JAKE COLON before DIMITRI PALI picked up the loose ball. The momentum was short-lived, as Sanborn was intercepted the very next play. Kean went 39 yards in the 12 plays in 5:02, scoring on a one-yard plunge. The Red Hawks looked poised to tack on three points on the last play of the first half, but Casimir's field goal attempt was blocked.
  • Sanborn was picked off to start third before Montclair forced a three-and-out. The Red Hawks chewed up 5:51, going 73 yards in 10 plays, capping the drive off with a 15-yard touchdown scamper from ABELLANY MENDEZ. The Red Hawks finished off their midway through the fourth with a 27-yard field goal from Casimir.
  • Kean scored a TD on a one-yard run, but JAYDEN BRIMAGE recovered the onside kick. KYSHIR DESIR picked up seven yards on 2nd-and-6 to gain a first down, and the Red Hawks closed out the contest with a pair of kneel-downs.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Lewis picked up his second 60+ yard run of the season, as he had a 66-yard run against Gettysburg in the season-opener. His 176 yards are the most in a game since John DiStefano picked up 208 against Kean on November 12, 2016.
  • The 275 yards rushing are the most since collecting 282 against Lincoln on September 20, 2014.
  • Wilkins hauled in four passes for 52 yards and a touchdown, with ANTHONY ROIGE catching six for 38 yards.
  • NICHOLAS BURGESS led the defense with 12 tackles, as ALEX BUCHWALD had seven.
FROM THE FIELD
